What is Historical Studies?

The minor in historical studies is designed to provide an overview of world history, including the study of U.S. history in greater depth. The courses provide students with a foundation in historical research, evaluation of sources, the diversity of human experience, and the opportunity to explore modern society from the context of the past.

Why study Historical Studies at UNH College of Professional Studies?

A minor in historical studies can complement your major, providing you the opportunity to think creatively about the past and better understand the present. Your research skills will be improved and most classes focus on source evaluation, effective communication, as well as cultural and contextual understanding. A history minor also broadens your perspectives on the past, its interpretations, and in thinking independently about how we have developed as a society, both locally and globally.

The minor in historical studies is designed to provide an overview of world history, including the study of U.S. history in greater depth. The courses provide students with a foundation in historical research, evaluation of sources, the diversity of human experience, and the opportunity to explore modern society from the context of the past.

NOTE: This minor may not be declared with the following major: BA Historical Studies.
听
Students will have the opportunity to:
1. Demonstrate a breadth of knowledge in world history.
2. Articulate key patterns of social, cultural, and political change.
3. Accurately apply all of the techniques in historical methods, source evaluation, and written analysis.
4. Appraise and contextualize information in order to convey both the particularity of past lives and the scale of human experience.
5. Craft well-supported historical research using discipline-specific writing and citation conventions.

All minor courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C-, and a 2.0 grade point average must be maintained in courses for the minor. Two courses must be at the upper level (600 or 700). Only 8 credits may overlap between major and minor.
