Granite State College, New Hampshire鈥檚 leading public provider of online higher education, has won the 2019 WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies (WCET) Outstanding Work (WOW) award for its innovative, online teacher preparation programs.

Since 2004, WCET (the WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies) has presented the  to colleges, universities, and organizations who implement exceptionally creative, technology-based solutions to contemporary challenges in higher education. The WOW awards help WCET meet its mission of promoting innovative and effective practice by providing exemplary programs as models for the higher education community to adapt for their own students and faculty.

Fellow 2019 WOW award recipients include the Colorado Department of Higher Education OER Council and Rio Salado College.

鈥淭his year, like every year, judging the submissions for the WOW awards was a challenge.鈥 Said Kara Monroe, the Provost and Senior Vice President of Ivy Tech Community College and the Chair of this year鈥檚 WOW Committee. 鈥淎ll of the submissions were outstanding. The selected recipients represent a set of proposals that highlight true innovation in higher education and a commitment to student success.鈥

Granite State College offers a range of teacher preparation programs that can be completed fully online, allowing students to continue working while pursuing a certification. This differs from traditional programs, which often require a full year of unpaid student teaching and can be challenging for adult students who need to continue working a full- or part-time job.

Nick Marks, Dean of the School of Education, describes the unique learning experience: 鈥淎s a student, your courses are delivered in our online classroom. And your clinical, student teaching requirements, are completed off-site in an educational setting. If you work as a paraprofessional or teaching assistant, you can use this role as your clinical site, which adds a great amount of flexibility to your schedule and also allows you to apply what you鈥檙e learning on-the-job right away.鈥
